Cutting-Edge Natural Filtration for Clean Water Solutions Worldwide

Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to the Greenfield Water Solutions FAQ page! Below, you’ll find answers to the most common questions about our filters, filtration technology, system maintenance, and more.

Gravity Feed Filtration

Can I use two different filters at the same time in a gravity feed system?

Yes, but we recommend using identical filters for optimal performance. Mixing different filters can result in uneven flow rates and inconsistent filtration.

How many filters come in an order?

Most gravity feed filters come two per order, but check the product listing to confirm.

What is the difference between Originals and Imperials?

Imperial filters have a larger surface area and higher flow rate than Original filters. Both are effective, but Imperials are ideal for larger systems or higher water demands.

How often should I replace my filters?

Filter lifespan varies based on water quality and usage. Most gravity feed filters should be replaced every 6–12 months. Check your specific filter listing for recommendations.

Do Greenfield Water filters fit Berkey systems?

Yes, our gravity filters are designed to be compatible with most Berkey systems and similar gravity-fed filtration units.

What is the purpose of the white tubes that come with my filters?

The white tubes are optional flow enhancers. If your filter is running slowly after proper flushing and 1–2 weeks of use, you can install them to help increase flow rate. They are not required but can improve filtration speed for some filters.

How do I know if my filter is still working?

Reduced flow rate, discoloration, or changes in taste can indicate the need for cleaning or replacement.

What happens if I drop my filter and it breaks?

Ceramic filters can crack if dropped. If your filter is damaged, it should be replaced to ensure effective filtration.

Why is my filter becoming discolored?

Discoloration is normal and indicates that the filter is capturing contaminants. Filters can be gently rinsed or cleaned as needed. (See maintenance instructions.)

I just installed my filter – why does my water taste strange?

New filters can sometimes have a slight “new filter” taste due to harmless manufacturing residues. This usually disappears within a few days to two weeks if the system has been flushed per the instructions.

Why is my water filtering slowly?

Gravity filters may take up to two weeks to reach their optimal flow rate. Factors like air pockets, clogging, or sediment-heavy water can slow filtration. Refer to your specific filter instructions for troubleshooting.

Are these filters removing beneficial minerals?

No. All of our filters and systems are designed to reduce contaminants while preserving essential minerals, ensuring that your water remains naturally balanced.

If I have a large Berkey/gravity feed system, do I need more than two filters?

Two filters are usually adequate but may not last as long in larger systems. Adding more filters can extend lifespan and improve flow rate.

Filter Maintenance & Performance

How often should I replace my filters?

Depending on water quality and usage, filter lifespan ranges from 6 to 12 months. Check the product listing for specific details.

Water Quality & Testing

Does Greenfield Water use RO systems?

No. Greenfield Water Solutions does not use reverse osmosis (RO). While effective, RO strips water of minerals, wastes water, and is a harsh filtration method. We believe in natural, efficient filtration that maintains beneficial minerals.

Will your systems remove 100% of the contaminants in my water?

No filtration system removes 100% of contaminants. Water chemistry is complex, and no single system can fully eliminate all pollutants. However, our filters are rigorously tested to remove or reduce key contaminants to safe levels.

Can I use a TDS meter with my Greenfield Water system?

No. TDS meters do not measure contaminants—they measure dissolved solids, including beneficial minerals. Because our systems retain healthy minerals, TDS readings may actually increase, which is not an indication of poor filtration.

How should I test my system?

For an accurate performance assessment, we recommend using a comprehensive water test, such as SimpleLab’s Tap Score. Additionally, a chlorine strip test can be a quick way to check filter efficacy—since chlorine is one of the first contaminants removed, any chlorine detected in the filtered water could indicate that other contaminants are also passing through. Order a test here.

What do I do if my test results look concerning?

Water test results can be confusing. If you receive concerning results, our team is happy to review them with you. If any contaminants exceed safe drinking limits, we’ll help you find the best solution.

Can I use a red dye test?

No. Red dye tests are not reliable and can even damage our filters. These tests do not accurately represent real-world filtration performance.

Technology & System Compatibility

What filters/system should I purchase for my water needs?

This depends on your water source and specific concerns. Check our product descriptions or reach out via chat, phone, email, or social media for personalized recommendations.

Technology & System Compatibility

Are your filters NSF certified?

Yes, many of our filters are NSF-certified, and in some cases, the filter media within them have been tested to NSF/ANSI standards. Our filters are either fully certified or have undergone independent lab testing to meet or exceed NSF performance guidelines.

NSF certification is a highly respected, independent verification that a water filter meets strict public health and safety standards for contaminant reduction, material safety, and structural integrity. Even if a filter does not carry an NSF stamp, some of our filters use NSF-tested media or have been third-party lab tested to confirm performance against NSF/ANSI standards.

We are transparent about certifications and testing—if you have questions about a specific filter, feel free to ask!

Do you sell a whole home system for large homes?

At this time, we do not. Our PureSync Home is our only whole-home system, designed for city water homes with up to three bathrooms. Larger homes would require additional pressurization and flow rate management, which we are not currently set up to provide.

Do you sell whole home systems for homes on well water?

No, we do not currently offer whole-home systems for well water. Because well water quality varies significantly, it often requires a customized setup and ongoing technical support, which we are unable to provide. However, we do offer highly effective under-sink and countertop filtration systems for well water.

Do you still sell structuring and energizing devices?

No, we no longer sell structuring and energizing devices. Our focus has shifted to high-performance filtration that prioritizes effective contaminant reduction. You can read more about our transition here.

Can your filters be used with well water?

Yes, we offer filters suitable for well water in under-sink, countertop, and gravity feed configurations. Check the product details to ensure the filter you choose is designed for well water use.

Do your systems work in emergency situations?

Yes—if you select an appropriate filter, our gravity systems can function off-grid without electricity. We’re also releasing an emergency gravity feed filtration kit in 2025/2026.

Can I install an inline remineralizer with my system?

Yes! You can install an inline mineralizer or use a mineral bag to add beneficial minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium to your water. However, our filters are designed to preserve beneficial minerals naturally, so additional remineralization is not required.

Additional Questions You Might Find Helpful

Do your filters remove fluoride?

Yes, some of our filters reduce fluoride. Check product listings for details on specific fluoride-reducing filters.

How do I clean my gravity filters?

Most gravity filters can be cleaned with a gentle scrub under running water. (See maintenance instructions for details.)

Do you offer replacement parts?

Yes, we sell replacement filters, priming tubes, and other accessories.

Are you still Greenfield family-owned?

Yes! Greenfield Water Solutions remains family-owned. Our CEO, Ængel Greenfield, is the daughter of founder Gary Greenfield.
